USPS Priority Mail Tracking Numbers - New Tracking Number, but Delivered Last October 2012 ?

22nd Nov 2013

It would appear to us that there is an issue with the USPS Tracking # system. On July 18, 2013 we first shared with our Twitter followers this:

"BREAKING: Printing Online Priority labels today? Check them. We just did
1 to GA, and the tracking # shows delivered last year to Oregon!?" (forgive our grammar, we only had 140 characters to get our message across.) Shipping from Florida, to GA July 18th 2013, but when the tracking # is entered into the USPS website, it shows that tracking# was delivered to Oregon October 2012.

On the 18th of July we printed several Priority Mail labels, then entered the tracking #'s into our software and by shear luck, accidentally clicked the TRACK PACKAGE button on one of the packages. The USPS website reported back to us that the package had already been delivered..... in October of LAST YEAR (2012).

This has caused some confusion, and frustrating customers not knowing if or when their order even shipped. Many customers have filed claims with Amazon and eBay for purchases made through their sites stating the tracking # shows the package as delivered, but they never received their order.

We reported this issue to the software provider we use to print all of our USPS labels, and they were aware of it on the 18th, and we assume the USPS is aware of the issue and taking steps to correct this. On July 29th, we saw more shippers still having this issue, so it has not yet been corrected.

UPDATE: 8-1-13 12:30pm
A customer of ours just emailed stating we must have made an error because he just tracked his USPS package and it shows delivered to Oregon October 22, 2012. We tried to explain the situation and hope he believes us, as I have to say, it does sound far fetched. His label was printed and shipped on July 30th 2013. All the labels we have had this problem with have two things in common, they all were delivered to Oregon, and all in October 2012.

Called USPS to ask if they had any updates, and they told me there was no known issue? I filed a case and will see what happens.

Upon further investigation, I just clicked track package through the ebay system and it has the  October 22, 2012 Delivery to Oregon, BUT, when tracking on the USPS website, it shows estimated delivery for today. This might not be a USPS issue, but a eBay issue?

Update: 8-1-13 1:40pm EST
Ok, just checked a label we printed today. Tracked it through ebay's system, AND USPS website, and they BOTH show Delivered October 22, 2012, to Minnesota .  So now I am thinking it may after all be a USPS issue. I am wondering if the USPS is the problem, and after a day or so if they are going through correcting the problem and sites like eBay do not get the updated change until much later?

UPDATE: 8/5/13
Remember, on 8-1-13, we called the national customer service # for USPS to report this and see when it would be corrected. They said they would have someone look into it and get back to us. Today, 8-5-13 the local Post Office calls and asks what is the problem? I told her I thought this was a national issue, probably nothing a rural, front end clerk could do to fix it. (That is why I called the National customer service phone# to start with.) Of course, she couldn't help and is going to try to find a number to report this to. I am not sure why the national customer service agent didn't do that to start with? Why would you pass along a tracking/software issue to a local post office front end clerk?
